The Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) aims to teach its vocational and post-secondary students hands-on knowledge across nine campuses in Hong Kong. They offer nine disciplines, amongst others including applied science, business administration, information technology, electrical and industrial engineering.

Gravio caught the attention of the Department of Engineering at IVE Sha Tin campus because of its simplicity. While the team at that campus is using other IoT systems in their curriculum, too, they found that many of the existing systems are often relatively cumbersome to use and based on sometimes proprietary technologies. While it is suitable for students to know about those systems, actually realizing an idea or creating a project in a reasonable time can be challenging.

Gravio on the other hand is simple to use, can be learned in hours or even minutes, rather than days without any programming knowledge, and is based on open standards. Gravio is designed to get started and come up with results quickly. This allows students to focus on the creative aspect of the technology and the realization of their ideas.

One of the challenges the school faces is that Gravio is not a well-known brand and household name in Hong Kong yet. This is why Gravio puts emphasis on the actual technologies which Gravio is based on teaching students. These include Google’s Tensorflow for computer vision deployment, Google’s Cloud Platform for training the student’s own computer vision models, ONVIF for security network camera standards or MQTT for messaging and communication standards.

Christoph Burgdorfer, Managing Director of Asteria Technology Singapore is excited about the partnership and is looking forward to helping the next generation of students learn and become creative in IoT technologies.

“I believe Gravio is a great tool to teach students about the possibilities of connected and AI-driven technologies. They like to bring their ideas to life, which is much easier with Gravio than with a heavy-weight industrial IoT system. Besides, Gravio works with off-the-shelf sensors that can be bought in any Apple Store in Hong Kong.”

Kelvin To, Lecturer Department of Engineering, IVE Sha Tin, adds:

“Gravio IoT Training Kits managed to make usually complicated process of IoT device setup much simpler with the templates they provided.  This templates provided made pairing devices, setting up actions to execute and linking up different devices much easier.  It even provide detailed tutorial for connections to third party services which are essentials for the very diverse world of IoT systems.”

The team of the Department of Engineering at IVE Sha Tin will be serviced by Asteria’s partner Livesense, an Australian IoT and sensing company that has an established presence in Hong Kong.

September 2022 marked the kick-off of the first session where the staff learned about Gravio and its usage. Follow us on LinkedIn to stay up to date on further developments.
